Signal selection best practices

TL;DR

Signals are only useful if they change what a good rep would do. Pick signals that predict buying readiness for your offer, wire each to a distinct agent response, and prune signals that fire a lot but never convert.

Choose signals that imply action

A signal is worth ingesting only if it should change targeting or timing. Funding, relevant hiring, a champion's job change, and product-led usage are high-signal for most offers. Generic firmographic changes usually aren't.

Match the signal to the response

Each signal should trigger a specific, relevant motion — funding warrants a different opening than a job change or a website intent hit. Wiring one generic sequence to every signal wastes the signal's specificity, which was the whole point (see Signal-triggered plays).

Prioritize freshness

Signals decay. Acting on funding news within days beats acting weeks later, and in-session intent beats month-old intent. Prefer real-time signal ingestion over polling, and let the agent act while the signal is still hot.

Prune what doesn't convert

Review which signals actually preceded replies and meetings. A signal that fires constantly but never converts is noise — it inflates the queue and dilutes agent focus. Drop it and reallocate budget to signals that earn their place.
