Lead Attribution

Lead attribution is the assignment of credit for a lead to the campaign, channel or touch that produced it, forming the link between marketing spend and pipeline.

What is Lead Attribution?

Lead attribution is narrower than marketing attribution: it stops at the lead rather than following through to revenue, which makes it simpler to implement and easier to misread. The mechanics are UTM parameters, referrer capture, form-source fields and self-reported source questions, resolved into a single origin per lead. Two decisions determine how useful the result is. First, first-touch or last-touch — first-touch credits discovery and flatters awareness channels, last-touch credits conversion and flatters branded search; capturing both is cheap and worth doing. Second, what happens to the untrackable, which in B2B is most of it. A buyer who heard a podcast, read a peer recommendation and then searched your brand will attribute to organic search unless you ask them directly. That is why a single open 'how did you hear about us' field on the demo form frequently outperforms the whole tracking stack for demand-creation channels.

Why it matters

  • Provides the direct link between spend and lead volume that budget decisions depend on.
  • First-touch and last-touch tell different stories, and capturing only one biases the conclusion.
  • Self-reported source recovers the untracked channels that click data structurally cannot see.

Use cases

  • Channel budgeting. Cost per lead by source, used to shift spend between channels each quarter.
  • Campaign readout. A specific campaign's lead contribution isolated from background volume.
  • Dark-channel recovery. A self-reported field capturing referrals and communities tracking misses.
