Third-Party Data

Third-party data is information collected by an outside provider that had no direct relationship with the person or company, then aggregated and licensed or sold to you.

What is Third-Party Data?

Third-party data is bought rather than earned. A provider assembles it from public sources, publisher networks, panels, partner contributions and web crawling, then licenses the aggregate. It is what makes cold prospecting possible at all — you cannot build a target list of accounts you have never interacted with from first-party data by definition — and it is the standard source for firmographics, technographics, contact details and category intent. Its weaknesses are structural and worth stating plainly. Accuracy is lower than first-party because nobody observed the behaviour directly. Freshness varies widely and is rarely disclosed honestly. Coverage differs sharply by geography and company size. And the regulatory ground has been shifting for a decade, with the third-party cookie gone, GDPR and CCPA constraining use, and further US state legislation arriving. The sensible posture is to use it for reach and discovery, verify anything you intend to act on, and never let it be the sole basis for a claim about a person.

Why it matters

  • The only viable source for reaching accounts you have no prior relationship with.
  • Accuracy and freshness are structurally weaker than first-party, so verification before use is mandatory.
  • Regulatory constraints keep tightening, which makes first-party depth the more durable investment.

Use cases

  • List building. Sourcing net-new accounts and contacts that match the ICP.
  • Firmographic enrichment. Filling size, industry and location on records captured with only an email.
  • Category intent. Aggregate research signals indicating an account is evaluating your category.
